Abstract: Language derives from the necessity of establishing various social relationships. Language is not only used for e*pressing intentions and e*changing thoughts to reach communication purposes, but also entails and passes down the quintessence of the development of human society. Vocabulary, as the minimum meaningful unit, the use of which are affected by kinds of social factors, such as education level and the circumstance of acquisition which are discussed in this thesis. Whether an advanced word can be applied properly largely determines if an appropriate social intercourse goes well in a certain conte*t. This thesis focuses on an analysis of current situation of the use of advanced English vocabulary and the relevant factors which influence the acquisition. Some frequent advanced words used by American professors over Open Yale Courses are collected and classified, and a comparison of these words with its basic synonyms in denotation, connotation, sentimental color, and style are made so as to provide a reference for the non-native English learners in advanced English acquisition.

USE THESE WORDS TO IMPRESS NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS !
---A Research on Advanced English Vocabulary Used by the Educated Native Speakers
1. Introduction
1.1 Background and significance of the study
To many non-native English learners, the language acquisition face various problems in reaching the level of high proficiency. This predicament comes from the limit of language circumstance, and the level of education which in some cases causes inappropriate use of word in a certain discourse. Some evidence may soundly support this view: The education-difference whereby the way a scholar’s talking about an issue may differ from the way of a middle school graduated worker in the diction. And vice versa, their selections of words reflect a disturbing gap in knowledge. For learners who have already know basic grammar and sentences structures, the size of vocabulary is the significant and difficult part of study. Thus, in this paper, I conduct researches on the current situation of English in China, in particular, from the view of rising academic purpose and the current approaches of acquisition, and relevant concepts of advanced vocabulary as well as the importance of learning in a favorable advanced words environment. Synonyms as a big indicator of identifying differences in basic words and advanced words are going to be e*plicitly discussed with e*amples collected from the native speakers’ discourses. These efforts made to reach out to people who have a wish to impress native speakers by using big words suitably.

1.2 Scope of the study

The scope of this research is restricted due to the limit number of the subjects of my research: 26 lectures in The American Novel Since 1945 of Open Yale Courses by Professor Amy Hungerford and 26 lectures in Game Theory by Professor Ben Polak. In addition, two professors’ personal preferences in the application of advanced vocabulary may slightly influence the general characteristic of its usage.

2. Current situation of the status of English in the world

English was carried round the globe by migrants and now has become the native language in US, Australia, New Zealand, or assume a prominent role, as in India, Philippines, South Africa, and Singapore. Since most English speaking countries have capital resources like technology and science which are needed for the development elsewhere, the whole world especially Asia has rolled in the waves of learning English. On the assumption of David Crystal(1997), a British linguist, the number of English users is from 100 million to 1 billion, based on how you define”can”.

2.1 English in China

It may not be an e*aggeration to say that China has the largest number of English learners which nearly overwhelm the total of native speakers. Nowadays people learn English via all sorts of ways to pursue various purposes, for instance, education. In many instances, however, for some reasons, second language learners feel incompetent as they’re trying to access a very native discourse with appropriate words. Discording with the soaring numbers, less proficiency becomes a barrier preventing English learners from stepping further.

In September 2001 English was enforced as a compulsory subject from Grade 3(Age 9)in all primary schools in Mainland China. Since the so called Frenzied Period, the statistical number had reached up to 3 hundred million by 2006(*inhua News Agency, 2006), which account for a quarter of the total population. Amid, there are tens of millions of college students.

2.2 Motivations in English Acquisition

Though English is a necessary means to interact with most developed countries and has tremendous users, the range of usage for non-native speakers is still limited and restricted in a few fields. Robert C. Gardner and Lambert categorised two motivations on the learning of English Vocabulary: integrative motivation and instrumental motivation.

For ordinary Chinese, studying English are out of four general purpose: international trade, professional need, daily conversations, and academic e*change(Anderson, 2009). Dealing with business is the most common incentive followed by professional need, under which circumstance, technical terms are the basics. For a large number of English learners, primarily those who are inclined to live abroad or merely out of individual interest of contacting with the rest of world, day to day communications are the main parts.
