An Analysis of the Non-entities in O. Henry’s Three Short Stroies
Abstract
O. Henry, one of the most famous realistic short-story writers in the world, is good at describing stories of non-entities in society. With his humorous, ironical and comic writing style, O. Henry constantly reveals humanity in the twist endings of his celebrated short stories. This paper mainly ueses the realism to analyse characteristics of the non-entities in O.Henry’s stories including swindlers, robbers, working people, painters, presenting different qualities. , he joined the Houston Post as a reporter and columnist. In 1894 cash was found to have gone missing from the First National Bank in Austin, where Porter had worked as a bank teller. When he was called back to Austin to stand trial, O.Henry fled to Honduras to avoid the trial. In 1897 he was convicted of embezzling money, although there has been much debate over his actual guilt. After hearing the news his wife dead, Porter entered in a prison at Columbus, Ohio.
When O.Henry was in prison, he began to support his daughter by writing short stories. In his lifetime, he met a lot of people living the bottom of society like clerks, policemen, painers, and waitresses. This helped him to get involved with the majority of the working class who are face various kinds of stress every day. However, surprisingly, this is also where true love appears. His thoughts of society was more deep than others which should thanks to his fate. Actually, the whole life of O. Henry is just one typical “O. Henry’s story”, full of twists and turns.
Certain literature reflects certain social phenomena and history. On the other hand, the character of protagonist plays the most important role in the literature. Like a mirror, O. Henry’s works reflect the lower-class people at that time. Although he suffered the misery and oppression, it is easy to find the wisdom and goodness in his works. O. Henry created more than 300 short stories in about ten years of time. He was good at describing American society, especially the lives of the non-entities in New York. At the same time, he also uses unique ingenuity to demonstrate their mi*ed feelings well. O. Henry’s works are rich with original conception and witty language. And the endings always make people feel reasonable, but also suprising; his works are known as the “the Humorous Encyclopedia of the American Life”. There are full of colorful characters most of whom are derived from his inclination to wander streets and parks, and to talk to low-class people of every kind and condition in his stories.
Most of O. Henrys stories were set in his own time, the early years of the 20th century.
